Tropical Cyclones Flashcards

1
Q

What temp do tropical cyclones form and where

A

They form at sea temp of aprox 26.5°C or higher and when there is a change in wind shear is low. At the source of most of the cyclones at 5° to 30° at the tropic of cancer and capricorn

Q

How do cyclones begin to form

A

warm moist air rises and condenses releasing huge amount of energy. The risng air create low pressure which increases the surface winds. As air rises it creates a drought, new air rushes to replace it creating a cycle

Q

How does earth’s rotation effect cyclones

A

Earth’s rotation deflects the paths the winds, causing the cyclone to spin.

Q

What direction do cyclones go

A

CYCLONES move west from the eastery winds but as they move a way from the equator their path starts to curve east as they get to mid-lattitude westerlies.

6
Q

Why do cyclones get stronger

A

They intensify due to them gaining more energy from the warm water

7
Q

Why do cyclones lose strength

A

They dissipate when they move on ground or cooler water as the energy supply is cut off. (Also change of windspeed).

Q

list Structural features of cyclone

A
  • Usually last 7-14 days
  • Hudrends of km wide
  • Centre eye can be up to 50 km across with lowpressure and clear sky (high temp)
  • Spiralling rising air eyewall with very strong winds (160kmph) with storms (low temp)
  • spin anticlockwise in NH and opposite SH
  • towards the edges the wind speed falls with smaller clouds
  • cumulonimbus clouds
  • top is dense cirrus canopy

Q

How are cyclone eyes formed

A

By decending air and the earth’s roatation making it spin (coriolos force)

Q

Socail vulnerabilities from cyclones

A

Poorer countries cant afford good quality materials
Healthcares may not be good
Little money for flood defenses or training emergency teams
Poor infrastructure so harder to rescue people

Q

economic vulnerabilities from cyclones

A

Many people depened on agriculture
No insurance to conver repairments
(However, economic impact could be greater in richer countires as damage is woth lots more)

16
Q

Forecasting

A

To predict when cyclones happen by weather-forecasting and satellite technology to moniter cyclones. You can predict their path and the magnitude by measureing windspeed.

17
Q

Evacuation

A

Warning strategies as fast as possible as well as evacuation routes to get people away fast. Emergency services can train and prepare for disasters

18
Q

Defences

A

Coastal defenses like sea walls or stilts on houeses against floods.

19
Q

Hurricane Katrina (Category 3) in SE USA facts

A
  • Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama were warned 3 days before it would happen with constant updating
  • 70-80% of New Orleans evacuated
  • flood defences (embankments) failed flooding 80% of it
  • Louisiana oil spill
  • 1800 deaths
  • 300,000 houses destroyed
  • 3 mill left with no electricity
  • 230,000 jobs lost
20
Q

Cyclone Nargis (category 4) Myanmer facts

A
  • 48 hour warning (not to poorer areas)
  • mangrove forest prtected coast but a bit deforested
  • Irrawaddy delta 14000km sqaured flooded
  • 38,000 hactares of mangrove destroyed
  • erosion caused salination
  • 140,000 deaths
  • 450,000 houses destroyed
  • 65% of rice paddies damaged
  • disease from poor sanitary conditions.
