1944 - raised the age of compulsory education to 15 and provided free education - also introduced the tripartite system
how where children tested? what did this determine?
through the 11+ exam (IQ test) in order to discover which kind of school most suited their abilities

intelligence was innate and could be scientifically measured

grammar - for academically able pupils
secondary modern
technical
were there equal opportunities?
no - determined by one exam
was there parental choice?
no
was there diversity?
yes - multiple types of schools
did it raise standards?
yes - for grammar
did it increase competition?
yes - exam get into grammar schools
did it meet the needs of the economy?
prepared for manual jobs however didn’t provide basic education for those in technical schools
