what does Lupton propose?
Ethnic minorities experience higher levels of isolation and segregation within school than outside of school.

4.ethnocentric curriculum
what is institutional racism?
Intentional or unintentional repeated cases of discrimination that take place at an organisational level e.g lack of black teachers, disciplining some ethnic groups more than others.
what does Gillborn argue?
Schools are institutionally racist e.g black children are put in lower sets
what did Cline et al find in regards to racism amongst pupils?
Racism was common among pupils - a significant proportion of ethnic minority pupils reported race-related name calling or verbal abuse at school.
what did the Swann Report suggest about labelling and racism by teachers?
Small minority of teachers are consciously racist, but there is evidence of a good deal of unintentional racism
what did teachers do?
They favoured and gave more time and attention/praise/encouragement to white pupils.
what did Bhatti find in there study?
Teachers ignored and didn’t help Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Indian students
what did Wright and Connolly find?
Teachers hold ethnic based stereotypes with more positive expectations on Asians (seeing them as quiet and well behaved) whereas black carribean pupils were seen to have low academic potential
what is an ethnocentric curriculum?
Curriculum that is based on the cultural values and perspectives of a particular ethnic or cultural group.
how does the ethnocentric curriculum lead to underachievement?
Due to it being based around white culture, ethnic minority pupils may struggle to relate or understand
