Define the term Psychiatry.
a branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental and emotional disorders.
Define the term psychiatric disorder.
a disorder identified as a manifestation of a psychological biological or developmental dysfunction in the individual regardless of its original cause.
Name the major characterizing features of bipolar disorder.
manic episodes that may have been proceeded by and may be followed by hypomanic or major depressive episodes. results in unusual shifts in mood energy activity levels and ability to perform day to day activities.
Describe the core symptoms of GAD.
excessive worry and anxiety about a variety of events or activities on more days than not for period of at least half a year.
Name the core symptoms of a major depressive episode.
includes at least 1 of 2 core symptoms which are depressed mood and or lost of interest of pleasure in all or most activities. must persist for at least 2 weeks.
Identify the major differentiating features between MDD and persistent depressive disorder.
MDD is comprised of one or more discrete major depressive episodes that represent a change from the individuals normal functioning. persistant depressive disorder is characterized by chronic less severe depressive symptoms that have been ongoing for several years and involve varying degrees of functional impairment.
Summarize the HPA axis hypothesis of depression.
excessive secretion of glucocorticoids such as cortisol, can result in an abnormal state knwo as hypercortisolemia bringing about physical and functional changes in certain brain regions that can lead to depression.
summarize monoamine deficiency hypothesis of depression.
depression is due to a deficiency of monoamine neurotransmitters.
summarize the monoamine receptor hypothesis of depression.
deficiency in monoamines results in a compensatory increase in the number of monoamine neurotransmitter receptors is thought to cause depression.
