Caused by reactivation of herpes zoster in the geniculate ganglion, severe facial palsy associated with vesicular eruption in the external auditory canal,sometimes also in the pharynx and other parts of the integument. 8th cranial nerve can also be affected.
Causes of recurrent laryngeal nerve damage (especially the left) ?
Intrathoracic disease. Aortic arch aneurysm, enlarged left atrium, bronchial and mediastinal tumors are much more frequent causes than are intracranial disorders.
