GBS and other Immune-Mediated Neuropathies Flashcards
Some features of Miller-Fisher Syndrome ?
Ataxia, Opthalmoplegia and Areflexia of limbs without weakness. It accounts for 5% of all cases and is associated with antibodies to the ganglioside GQ1b
How high is the mortality rate of GBS ?
<5% , death usually results from secondary pulmonary complications.
Which conditions are reasonable to exclude in all patients with presumptive CIDP ?
Vasculitis, Collagen vascular disease (especially SLE), chronic hepatitis, HIV infection, amyloidosis, DM, IBD and lymphoma.
Two interesting differences between CIDP and GBS ?
CIPDP responds to glucocorticoids, whereas GBS does not. As many as 25% of patients with clinical features of CIDP also have an MGUS.
Two features of Multifical Motor Neuropathy (MMN) ?
The arms are affected more frequently than the legs, and >75% of all patients are male.
Some features of Anti-Hu Paraneoplastic Neuropathy ?
Marked sensory ataxia, pseudoathetosis, and inability to walk, stand, or even sit unsupported.
