A
- lesion of the trigeminal nerve
- etiology unknown or can result from compression
- occurs in older adults (over 50)
- abrupt onset

signs and symptoms
A
- brief paroxysms of neurogenic pain along distribution of CN V (usually mandibular or maxillary division)
- reoccurring frequently
- unilateral

examine
A
- pain
- trigger points: light touch
- triggering stimuli: extremes of heat or cold, chewing, talking, brushing teeth, movement of air across the face
- motor function: control is normla

Medical:
A
- medications
- alcohol injections
- surgery

A
may be effective for pain relief

yellow/red flags
A
- bilateral
- vision changes
- age < 40
