What is it
A
- lesion of facial nerve, CN VII, resulting in unilateral facial paralysis (both upper and lower parts of face)

etiology
A
acute inflammatory process of unknown etiology resulting in compression of the nerve within the temporal bone

signs and symptoms
A
- muscle of facial expression on one side are weakened or paralyzed
- loss of control of salivation or lacrimation
- onset is acute, with maximum severity in a few hours or days
- may be proceeded by pain behind the ear

recovery
A
most recover fully in several weeks or months

examine
A
- drooping of corner of mouth, eyelids that dont close
- function of muscles of facial expression: have patient wrinkle forehead, raise eyebrows, frown, smile, close eyes tightly, puff cheeks

corticosteroids
analgesics

goals
A
- protect cornea (artificial tears)
- electrical stimulation to maintain tone, support function of facial muscles
- provide active facial muscles exercise
- may require face sling to prevent overstretching
- provide functional retraining: foods that can be easily eaten
- provide emotional support
