Tricyclics Flashcards
How do tricyclics work?
Work by blocking the serotonin transporter and the norepinephrine transporter.
Results in increased concentration of serotonin and
norepinephrine at the synapse
Leads to increased neurotransmission
Do tricyclics affect dopamine?
Mostly no
Tricyclics also have antagonistic effects on ______ and ________ receptors which lead to many of its side effects
Tricyclics also have antagonistic effects on HISTAMINE and muscarinic acetylcholine receptors which lead to many of its side effects
Which 2 channels do tricyclics also affect, leading to cardio toxic effects?
Sodium and Calcium
What are the tricyclics? (6)

Common side effects for Tricyclics? (4 main)
anticholinergic - dry mouth and skin, blurred vision, constipation, and difficulty urinating (retention);
confusion and delirium in elderly;
drowsiness and sedation in elderly;
weight gain
Tricyclic precautions?
Orthostatic hypotension, can lead to fainting; withdrawal sxs; sexual dysfunction; SI; drowsiness & blurred vision; cardiac arrhythmia; serotonin syndrome
Tricyclics block the ________ transporter AND the ________ transporter
Tricyclics block the serotonin transporter AND the norepinephrine transporter
As for mechanism, tricyclics results in increased/decreased concentration of serotonin and NE at the synapse?
Increased
tricyclics result in increased concentration of serotonin and norepinephrine at the synapse
