What was the Vendee Revolt ? (March 1793)

A

The convention had ordered a levy of 300,000 conscripts to fight against the First coalition. Unwilling to die for a government, whose policies they objected, they took arms in revolt. Over 10,000 rebels attacked and overran the town of Cholet, begining the War in Vendee. Later supressed by National Guard recalled from war.

What were the reasons for the fall of the Girondins ?

A

Girondins were pro war, french fortunes were declining. Domouriez’s defection to the Austrians damaged the Griondins, as they supported Dumouriez. Marats newspapers attacked the Girondins claiming they were complicit in Dumouriez’s defection.

Describe the purge of the Girondins ?

A

Robespierre called for the sans culottes to rise up in insurrection against Girondin deputies, On June 2nd 1793 80,000 sans culottes and National guard surronded the convention and called for the arrest of the Girondin deputies. Georges Couthon proposed a vote within the convention on the arrest of 29 Girondin deputies.

who killed Marat and why ?
(13 July 1793)

A

Charlotte Corday, stabbed Marat while delivering a note to him in his bath. Corday killed Marat due to his role in the purge of the Girondins, she also believed Marat would only cause further unrest within France.

A

General de Wimpffen, attempted to raise an army to march on Paris. Due to citys treason Lyon was wiped off the map, nearly 2000 were killed and 600 houses were demolished.
