triage Flashcards
what is triage
to sort or choose
process for sorting and classification of patients to determine priority of need and proper placement of treatment
which patients should we pay more attention too
respiratory, cardiovascular, and CNS
what are 6 questions for medical situations
how is the animal breathing? what color are the gums? what is the level of consciousness? V/D? frequency and what does it look like? Toxin ingestion? any medications currently on?
what are 7 questions for trauma related situations
what is the nature of the injury? how is the animal breathing? what color are the gums? is there any bleeding? what is the level of consciousness? is the animal ambulatory? are there any obvious fractures / wound?
what is the ABC assessment
detect early signs and allow immediate intervention
Airway
Breathing
Circulation
what is the airway in the systemic approach?
listen for breathing (obstruction)
visual inspection
what is the breathing in the systemic approach?
rate and effort, posture, paradoxical breathing? flail chest
Ascultation (crackles, wheezes, abesent, stretor/stridor)
what is the circulation in the systemic approach
aim = gauge the effectiveness of heart in pumping blood to perfuse body tissues, exam concentrates indictators of cardiovasulcar performance or perfusion parameters
what are the 7 perfusion parameters
MM (pink and moist?) Abnormal color CRT ( short, prolonged, normal, pulse quality) HR )rate rhythm sounds mentation extreme temp blood pressure
what about dysfunction of the CNS system
spinal trauma? mentation? triage immediately if seizure/ twitching
what should we do for a rapid whole body exam
laceration, wound, facture bruising abdomen (pain/ distention) urinary bladder evidence of debiliation (approx 2 min only)
