Trends in group 7 Flashcards
What are group 7 elements called?
halogens
What are the elements of group 7?
flourine
chlorine
bromine
iodine
What is flourine and its use?
flourine is a yellow gas used to make toothpaste
What is chlorine and its use
chlroine is a yellow green gas used to make bleaches and PVC plastics
What is bromine and its use
a brown liquid used for dyes and insecticides
What is iodine?
a black solid used to prevent goiter and treat thyroid cancer
What is the change of density in group 7?
volatility decreases down the group and melting point and density increases down the group
What is the trend in atomic radius in group 7?
Atomic radius increases down the group because the number of shells increase.
Ease of ionization in group 7
The ease of ionization decreases down the group because its harder for the atoms to gain electrons because the forceof attraction to the nucleaus decreases
Reactivity in group 7
The reativity is directly linked to the ease of ionization. The more the atom ionize the more reactive it will be. therefore reactivity decreases down the group
What is an oxidizing agent?
a substance that removes electrons from another substance
What is oxidizing power?
the ability the substance has to pull electrons from another body
Which element has the greatest oxidizing power?
Flourine because its the easiest to gain and electron.
