Atomic structure Flashcards
What are the subatomic particles that make up an atom?
protons
neutrons
electrons
What is the relative charge of protons, neutons and electrons
protons- +1
neutrons - 0
electrons - (-1)
What is the relative mass of protons, neutrons and electrons?
protons - 1
neutrons- 1
electrons- 1/1840
What are isotopes?
atoms of the same elements with different mass number due to their difference in neutrons. They have the same number of protons
What are radioisotopes?
isotopes with an unstable nuclei and undergo radioactive decay.
What are some used of radioisotopes?
carbon 14- dating- This is used to tell the age of living organisms. all organisms have a percentage of carbon 14 and when they die its ratio starts tp decrease. Measuring the amount left will determine the age of the organism.
cancer treatment/ radiotheraphy- colbalt 60 generate gamma rays that are used to destroy cancer cells
iodine 131 is used to treat thyroid cancer by injecting it into cancerous tumours.
Tracers- nitrogen 15 is used to track the movement and absorption of nitrogen in fertilizeers
technetium 99m- used to locate brain tumors and damaged heart cells .
