The Goal of Therapy Depends on…
- The type of disease (Acute vs. Chronic)
- The Patient (Young, Healthy vs. Older Patients with other diseases)
- The overall situation (Hospital care vs. Roadside care after an accident)
- Socioeconomic Factors (Insured vs. Uninsured patients)
Abortive Therapy
Therapy intended to stop the further progress of disease.
Ambulatory Therapy
Provides care on an outpatient basis
Chemotherapy
Treatment of cancer using drugs that are destructive to malignant cells & tissues
Combination Therapy (Polytherapy)
Uses multiple therapies or drugs at the same time.
Curative Therapy
Therapy intended to cure the root cause of a disease
Elective Therapy
Surgery to correct a non-life-threatening condition.
Exploratory Therapy
Surgery to aid in or confirming a diagnosis
First-Line Therapy {Induction therapy, primary therapy, front-line therapy}
The first therapy that will be tried based on experience or guidelines
Intensive or Critical Care
Treats extremely ill or injured patients (EX. Burn injuries)
Define Preventive Treatment
Strives to prevent illnesses from developing in the first place. (EX. vaccinations, health education, etc.)

Treatment by means of drugs
Plastic Surgery
Surgery to reconstruct or repair after injury
