- Official Name: Generally the same as Generic Name
Intramuscular Injection (IM)
Injections directly into the muscle
Subcutaneous Injection (SC)
Injections directly into the fat layer just below the skin
Intradermal
Injection administered just below the skin (dermis)
Intravenous (IV)
Injection of medicines or fluids into a vein; when there’s a lot of medicine to take.
Infusion Therapy
Medications or fluids infused into the patients body through their veins.
Buccal Administration
The medication is applied to the cheek (buccal) area of the mouth
Oral Administration
The medication is taken by mouth
Sublingual Administration
Placement of medication under the tongue
Inhalation
Breathing in vapor, steam, or gases through mouth or nose
Rectal Administration
Insertion of the medication as liquid (enema) or suppository into the rectum
Topical Application
Liquid, cream, or ointment is applied onto the area of the skin or mucous membrane to be treated.
Transdermal Administration
The medication is part of a patch that is applied onto unbroken skin
