Determine risk for persistent stuttering

Signs that an eval should be completed
A
- Positive family history of persistent stuttering
- Child awareness of stutter
- Stuttering for more than 3-6 months
- High parental concern

A
Most famous is Lidcombe program; treats overt stuttering by changing child behavior

Indirect treatment
A
Comes from diagnosogenic theory and focuses on changing the environment–no longer practiced w/o some direct tx.

3 Overarching goals of prek tx
A
- Promote fluency-facilitating environment (reduce communicative load etc.)
- Develop positive attitudes regarding communication
- Change speech patterns

7 Goals for PreK
A
- Parent will be a good listener regardless of fluency
- Parent will ID stressors in the child’s environment
- Create a fluency facilitating environment.
- Reduce communcative stress (slow rate, delayed response, etc.)
- Establish open communication and talk directly about stuttering.
- Explore speech and stuttering
- Modify speech behaviors
