Treating CVD Flashcards
What is central to cardiovascular disease and its treatment?
Atherosclerosis
What does primary prevention allow?
Keeps the disease from being established
What does secondary prevention allow?
Interrupts the disease process before it becomes symptomatic
What does tertiary prevention allow?
Limits the physical and social consequences of symptomatic disease
What are statins used for?
Primary prevention, reducing serum cholesterol by reducing hepatic cholesterol synthesis
What are two other actions of statins?
Anti-thrombotic
Improve endothelial function
What is aspirin?
Irreversible inhibitor of COX1. Limits thrombus formation and so reduces the incidence of heart attacks/strokes in those with atherosclerosis.
What does arachidonic acid break down into with addition of COX1?
Prostaglandin I2 and thromboxane A2
What do ACE inhibitors act on?
Renin-angiotensin system by blocking AngiotensinI being converted into angiotensinII causing fluid retention and vasoconstriction. Used to treat hypertension and heart failure.
