Traumatic & non-traumatic brain injury, periods Flashcards
critical periods
the rigid, narrow develpomental period in which a specific skill or function must be learnt
critical period example
first language acquisition, must occur in first 3-5 years of life
wat happens if a skill/fuunction isnt learnt during its critical period
they may never develop or be fully functional
sensitive periods
optimal developmental period for a specific function/skill to be learnt in the fastest and easiest way
what occur if you dont learn tthe skill/function in its specidic sensitive period
the flexability means that if exposed to the right environment, the skill be able to develop but it will be a lengthier and difficult process
example of sensitive period skill
second language acquisition, its much easier to learn a second language up until the age of 12, as an adult grammar rules and level of fluency will not be as developed as if it was learnt as a child
what are acquired brain injuries
all types of brain injuries that occur after birth
what are thetwo types of acquired brain injuries
traumatic brain injury and non-traumatic brain injury
traumatic brain injury
sudden physical trauma to the brain caused by an external force
examples of what causes traumatic brain injury
vehicle accidents, falls, violence or physical assulats, sporting accidents and infants being shaken
3 types of traumatic brain injury
direct impact injury, acceleration-deceleration injury and explosion
direct impact injury cause
one particular area of the brain impacted
acceleration-deceleration injury cause
car crash - breaking abruptly
shock wave injuryyy cause
explosion
how does traumatic brain injury occur/why is it harmful
when a persons head is hit hard enough the cerebrospinal fluid is not enough of a cushion to stop the brain from hitting the surrounding membranes or bones of the skull, this causes damage to the delicate brain tissue (e.g swelling, bruising, bleeding, tearing, increased pressure)
