Crush Syndrome
A general term. System effects of a crush injury. Can build up toxins after several hours (4).
- metabolic acidosis
- toxic to kidney & heart
Types of Burns
- Superficial
- Partial Thickness
- Full Thickness
Superficial Burn
Only epidermis. Red, painful, no blisters
Partial Thickness Burn
Epidermis and part of the dermis. Red, blisters, painful.
Full Thickness Burn
All skin layers, maybe even down to bone. No feeling or pain. Nerves damaged.
Burn Injury Zones
- Coagulation
- Stasis
- Hyperemia
Types of Burns
- Thermal
- Radation
- Chemical

Chemical Inhalations
Disrupts cell membranes & tissues.
- Acid Burns. Immediate pain. Coagulation Necrosis
- Alkaline Burns. Little pain. Continues to destroy. Liquefaction necrosis.
Radiation Injury
- Alpha (uranium, radium, polonium) harmful if ingested otherwise weak.
- Beta
- Gamma (x-ray)
- Neutron
Phenol
Industrial cleaner. Remove with alcohol. Flush with large volumes of cool water.
