Trauma Flashcards
At what point should fluid resuscitation be started in a crush injury?
Prior to extrication if possible
3 factors that lead to the development of crush syndrome?
degree of compressive force, amount of muscle mass involved, and the duration of compression
When does the onset of crush syndrome begin?
following the reperfusion of the injured muscle upon release from its trap
3 main acute concerns of crush syndrome?
electrolyte imbalances –> cardiac dysrhythmias (hyper k), hypovolemia and metabolic acidosis.
Essentials of crush syndrome management?
Pre treat crush injury prior to release of forces is essential (failure can result in death), aggressive fluid management (clinicall), electrolyte and dysrhythmia management, appropriate analgesia
