what is developmental trauma theory?
urvival strategies individuals (micro level) learn to cope w/ trauma
-expands understanding of negative impact of trauma on attachment
-coping strategies interfere w/ healthy development
-w/out resolution= state of fear & loses ability to regulate emotional & autonomic reactions
-uninterrupted= young child develops secondary complications (anxiety, shame, isolation, mood dysregulation, & uncontrolled anger or explosive outbursts)
-emotional & physical sx can emerge
the 4 R’s of trauma?
- “Realizing the widespread impact of trauma and understanding potential paths for recovery;
- Recognizing the signs and symptoms of trauma in clients, families, staff, and others involved with the system;
- Responding by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into policies, procedures, and practices; and
- Seeking to actively resist re-traumatization.” (SAMHSA, 2015, paragraph 2)
