What is CFIM?
- The first nursing family intervention model developed
- Was designed to help CHNs facilitate functioning in the cognitive, affective and behavioural domains
- Family strengths are identified and reinforced through the use of commendations
What are the 3 domains for sustaining effective family functioning?
1) Cognitive : offers new ideas, information or education on a health problem or risk
2) Affective: anything that reduces or increased family emotions that will block the family’s problem solving efforts
3) Behavioural : help family in interact or behave with one another. most often accomplished by inviting some or all family members to engage in specific behavioural tasks
What are 2 types of interventive questions?
1) Linear (investigative family members description or perception of the problem)
2) Circular (reveal explanations of problems)
What is an important aspect of the cognitive domain?
- Commending family and individual strengths
- Offering information and opinions
What is an important aspect of the affective domain?
- Validating, acknowledging or normalizing emotional responses
- Encouraging the telling of illness narratives
- Drawing forth family support
What is an important aspect of the behavioural domain?
- Encourage family members to be caregivers and offering caregiver support
- Encourage respite; giving rest to family members, basically encourage the primary caretakers to take some time off
- Devising rituals
What 3 characteristics do an empowered family present?
1) Access to and control over needed resources
2) Decision making and problem solving abilities
3) Abilities to communicate and obtain needed resources
What are the 5 stages of a home visit?
1) Engagement ; greeting family and making them comfortable during the interview process
2) Family assessment: gathering information on problems
3) Family intervention
4) Termination and evaluation
5) Post visit documentation
