Outer part of ear. Little blood flow
If csf drainage is noted in the ear
Apply loose dressing over the ear do not stop the flow and asses for other signs of basilar skull fracture
Open neck wounds
Can lead to air embolism and should be seal with an occlusive dressing immediately
Neurogenic shock signs
Hypotension, normal or slow pulse, lack of diaphoresis
Free floating feel of maxilla and clear fluid coming from pt nose.
Le fort fracture. Unstable facial fracture leads to poor bvm seal, ET intubation is necessary
In Pt with severe bleeding, bleeding control takes priority over airway
Basilar skull fracture signs
CSF drainage from nose and/or ears most often the nose, bruising around or under the eyes (raccoon eyes), bruising behind the ear (battle sign)
The phrenic nerve (c3 through c5) innervates the diaphragm
Hyperventilating is only indicated for pt with signs of cerebral herniation Etco2 target 30-35
