trasnfer of skills Flashcards
what is a positive transfer?
where skill can be directly transferred from one sport to another. for example, the ability to rollerblade first learns how to ice skate
what is negative transfer?
when the learning of one skill, makes the learning of another more difficult. For example, a squash player who learns tennis might find it difficult not to use their wrist during shots.
what is proactive transfer of skill
when a previously learned skill influences a skill that is currently being learned. For example, throwing motor programmed as a child will later transfer positively and proactively to an overarm bowl in cricket.
what is retroactive transfer of a skill?
when the learning of a new skill can affect a previously learned skill
what is bilateral transfer?
the learning of one skill can be bilaterally transferred from one limb to another. for example, a footballer learning to pass off their right foot, then learning to pass off their left.
how do you optimize positive transfer?
- Make sure the individual understands the similarities between the two skills
- make sure the basics of the first skill are well learnt so that they transfer more easily into the second skill
How can you limit negative transfer?
- make sure the performer knows the difference between the two skills
- Make sure the practice session is similar to match situations to ensure a larger generalized motor program.
