Q

what is the cognitive stage of learning?

A

this is the beginner stage of learning. performers will begin to gather an understanding of the skill through trial and error and through the guidance of a coach or someone of high ability. any failure should not be dismissed by a teacher as it is all in the learning of the skill. it can be reinforced through praise and success of the outcome.

Q

what is the associative stage of learning?

A

this is where a beginner may start to see some success in their attempts at a skill. some trial and error may occur and it is the stage where understanding technique and personal preference takes place. the performer will be able to create mental cues between their actions and the observed mental image of a skill. a performer in this stage may be able to identify what is going wrong, but not entirely how to fix it.

Q

what is the autonomous stage of learning?

A

this is where a performer has become fully capable of performing a skill, it takes little to no conscious thought and happens automatically. it is known as muscle memory and there is no longer trial and error in this stage. the lack of conscious thought to complete the skill, gives the performer the ability to concentrate and think about external and environmental factors that occur around them, as well as tactics.
