Transverse waves and pulses Flashcards
Definition of Medium
Substance/material through which a pulse/wave will move.
What carries the pulse from one place to the other? But doesn’t create and isn’t the pulse?
Medium
Definition of a pulse?
Single disturbance that moves through a medium.
Definition of Amplitude and its unit of measurement
Measurement of how far the medium is displaced from its rest position.
Measured in metres (m)
Another term for the mediums rest position
Equilibrium
Term for this definition:
Measurement of how long the pulse is.
Pulse length
Term for this definition:
Distance a pulse travels per unit time.
Also give relative equation
Pulse speed
v=D/t
(Distance divided by time)
In a transverse pulse/wave the displacement of the medium is ………. to the direction (………) of the pulse/wave.
Give a synonym for the direction of the movement of the pulse/wave.
Perpendicular
Propagation
What two different types of Reflections can a pulse encounter as it hits an object?
Describe what happens.
Fixed-end Reflection.
Pulse inverts itself. Travels back to source. Fixed end will absorb some energy.
Free-end Reflection/Loose end Reflection.
Does not invert. Free-end doesn’t absorb as much energy.
Definition of a superposition
Give the two possible examples
When two disturbances occupy the same space at the same time.
Constructive interference.
Destructive interference.
A superposition when two pulses are in the same medium.
A superposition when two pulses are in different mediums.
Constructive interference. (Same medium, amplitude is the sum of the two pulses)
Destructive interference. (Different mediums, the biggest pulse cancels the smaller pulse)
Definition of a trough and a crest
Trough: pulse moving below the medium
Crest: pulse moving above the medium
What do you call the pulse that moves above and the pulse that moves below the medium?
Crest and Trough
Definition of a wave
Consists of a train of pulses. The periodic, continuous disturbance of a medium.
Term for: And unit:
Time taken for two successive crests/troughs to pass a fixed point. (One wavelength)
Period (T)
Measured in seconds (s)
