Transverse Waves Flashcards
Transverse Wave
A wave in which the disturbance is perpendicular to the direction of propogation
Wave
Regular repetitive disturbance of successive pulses
Superposition
When 2 pulses travelling in opposite directions overlap
Principle of superposition
Algebraic sum of the amplitudes of 2 pulses occupy same space at same time
Constructive Interferance
Phenomenon where both pulses are displaced in the same direction to produce pulse of increased amplitude
Destructive Intereferance
Phenomenon where both pulses are displaced in the same direction to produce pulse of reduced amplitude
Wavelength
Distance between 2 successive points in phase
Frequency
Number of waves passing a point per second
Period
Time taken for 1 complete wave to pass a point
Amplitude
Max delta x of the medium from its equilibrium position
In Phase
Points separated by a whole number of complete wavelengths
