Chemical bonding Flashcards
Chemical bond
lasting attraction between atoms, ions or molecules that enables formation of chemical compounds
Covalent bond
Form of chemical bonding where pairs of e- shared between atoms
Valency
Number of e- lost or gained to have full outer shell
Properties of covalent
MP+BP generally lower than those of ionic compound, generally more flexible than ionic, generally not soluble water, generally do not conduct electricity when dissolved water
Non-polar covalent
Electronegativity difference = 0
Weak polar covalent
0<Electronegativity difference<1
Strong polar covalent
1<=Electronegativity difference<2.1
Ionic
Electronegativity difference>=2.1
Ionic bond
1 or more e- transferred from 1 atom to another
Properties of ionic compounds
Ions in lattice structure, ionic solids crystalline at room temp, often hard high MP, brittle, can’t conduct electricity as solids but can as ionic solns
Metallic bond
electrostatic attraction between positive charge atomic nuclei of metal atoms and delocalised sea of valence e- in metal.
