Transverse Tarsal joint Flashcards
How many joints in the transverse tarsal? Name them
2; Talo/navicular and calacaneo/cuboid
What type and where is the talo/navicular joint
ball and socket; in medial foot slightly higher than lateral aspect of foot.
Describe talo/navicular joint
Characterized by convex surface on taler head. fitting against a concave surface of the navicular
where is calcaneo/cuboid joint?
in lateral foot, lower than the medial aspect of the foot
What movement does this group of joints provide?
eversion and inversion
what is special about this part of foot
It’s the ‘boss’ for what concerns all the adjustments of the foot while walking on even and uneven ground
name ligaments that support transverse tarsal joing
superiorly: talo/navicular & calcaneocuboid
laterally:bifurcate or Y ligament
Where does Y or bifurcate ligament run?
fro calcaneous verically to navicaular and almost horizontal to cuboid
Name the three inferior ligaments that are very strong and contribute to arch support
Long plantar ligament
Short plantar ligament
Spring ligament AKA calcaneo-navicular ligament
Where does long plantar ligament run
It’s more superficial and runs from calcaneous to ridge of cuboid, passes over groove and attaches to base of metatarsals
Where does spring ligament run
from sustentaculum tali of calcaneus to navicular and helps support talar head
What is the other tarsal joint?
the Cunieforms
What do cunieforms articulate with
each other and with navicular and cuboid posteriorly and the metatarsals anteriorly
plantar ligaments
dorsal ligaments
interosseous ligament b/w individual cuneiforms and between cuboid and lateral cuneiform
