Transtheoretical Theory Model Flashcards
Precontemplation (Model Steps)
Someone is not even considering the change (not necessarily do not know about it) Often either “I won’t” (I won’t do that have an opinion and not doing anything about it; may have misconceptions) “I can’t” (Might want to and think its important but why try because they can’t- these ones often have low behavioral control or low self efficacy: People who have tried before and failed miserably
Contemplation (Model Steps)
People who are thinking about it (going through the cognitive process); They are often weighing pros and cons (usually about time or can I do it,do I have access) Usually want to do it within the next 6 months (not acting yet)
Preparation (Model Steps)
Intending to adopt a behavior, commitment to making a change, People that attend to make a change within the next month (People inquiring about gym membership, choosing a diet) Also dabblers, someone who is trying to engage in behavior but not consistently or with a solid plan; Acquiring skills and resources which might take time
Action (Model Steps)
Actively engaging in the behavior because they have to be in it for 6 months in order to fully form the habit of it since at first it takes up a lot of head space
Maintenance (Model Steps)
After 6 months, turns into second nature (habit formation); Still have to protect against relapse but do not have to apply change processes as frequently as those in the action stage do
Consciousness Raising (Processes of Change-TTM)
A process of change that involves increasing awareness about the health damaging effects of a particular behavior-Education about how to do something (Preparation Stage) or why they could do it (Precontemplation)
Dramatic Relief (Processes of Change-TTM)
A process of change used to produce increased emotional awareness or anxiety, followed by relief if appropriate action is take- If you raise somebody’s concern about behavior, the emotional discomfort will be relieved if they take action (raising awareness of the threat
Self-Reevaluation (Processes of Change-TTM)
A process of change that combines both cognitive and affective assessments of one’s self image in conjunction with a given health behavior- What would their life be like if they adopted the health behavior, reevaluating their experience w the behavior
Environmental Reevaluation (Processes of Change-TTM)
A process of change that combines both affective and cognitive assessment of how the presence or absence of a certain health behavior affects one’s social environment- How is it affecting your family, friends or community, what is it doing to them?
Self-Liberation (Processes of Change-TTM)
A process of change that is both the belief that one can change and the commitment and recommitment to act on- About making a commitment, one of the most important aspects of this is having enough self-efficacy to feel you can do it (commitment is another word for intention and the number one predictor of that is self-efficacy) Fostering the self confidence and reinforcing that commitment to change
Helping Relationships (Processes of Change-TTM)
A process of change that combines caring, trust, openness, and acceptance, as well as support for the health behavior change-Primarily Preparation to action; Getting support by who can help you make it happen (Use from preparation to action and action to maintenance)
Counterconditioning (Processes of Change-TTM)
A process of change in which a person substitutes healthier coping strategies for unhealthy ones- this one can get from preparation to action and action to maintenance; People do things because they had a payoff so they must be replaced by something else that has one too
Contingency Management: (Processes of Change-TTM)
A microcosmic behavioral economic treatment approach that incentivizes pro-treatment behaviors, such as attendance, compliance, and for substance disorders, abstinence-Depending on your behavior, you get rewarded (get something for doing something)
Stimulus Control:
A process of change in which a person would remove cues for unhealthy behaviors and add cues that support the adoption and maintenance of healthy behaviors- Thinking about how to remove stimulus to move from contemplation to preparation
Social Liberation: (Processes of Change-TTM)
A process of change that focuses on utilizing or increasing social opportunities that support health promoting behavior- Ability to go against the norms around you, stop spending time with people who do not share your opinion
