Transportation Across Membrane Flashcards
Solute
part that dissolves
lower quantity substance in mixture
Solvent
will hold dissolved solute
higher quantity substance in mixture
solution
liquid mixture where solute is uniformly distributed within solvent
Diffusion
movements of particles from an area of high concentration to low concentration
Factors affecting diffusion
Temperature, concentration gradient, surface area
Osmosis
water molecules move through semi-permeable
(similar to diffusion)
Passive Transport
diffusion in the same direction as the concentration gradient (no energy)
Active Transport
diffusion against the concentration gradient
requires energy
Endocytosis
enclosing matter & bringing it in
Exocytosis
bringing out - releases contents to extracellular fluid
Isotonic
equal amount of things going out and in
Hypotonic
lots of solute, water will attempt to go into the cell, cell will get big
Hypertonic
water trying to get out, cell will shrivel
Homeostasis
steady state that results from maintaining near-constant conditions in the internal environment
