Everything Plants Flashcards
What are the 4 types of plant tissues?
epidermal
ground
vascular
merstematic
Epidermal Tissue:
Protective outer layer
on top and underside of a leaf
clear and thin
Ground Tissue
plant = mainly made up of ground tissue
function depends on where its found
stem - support & strength
roots - stores food and water
leaves - where photosynthesis occurs
Vascular Tissue
Moves substances from the roots to the leaves
transports sugars from the leaves to other parts
Meristematic Tissue
unspecialized tissue capable of dividing
found in several locations
responsible for growing new parts of the plant
Name the plant organs:
roots, leaf, stem, flower
purpose of the root
anchors plant in soil so it permits plants to grow
Collects water & transports it to the stem
tissues that make up the root
epidermal tissue = root cap
Below that = meristematic
ground = centre of root, to store food and water
vascular = centre of root, to trasnport water + energy
purpose of the leaf + its tissues
accomplish photosynthesis
Tissue - vascular carries water needed for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide enters / oxygen + excess water escape via epidermal tissue (stomata)
purpose of the stem
Transports water + nutrients through the plant
supports the leaves and flowers
tissues of the stem
ground -support and strength
epidermal - allows for the exchange of gasses + water vapour
vascular - transports
purpose of the flower + tissue
reproduce
meristematic tissue, differentiates into different cells
2 types of vascular tissue
xylem and phloem
Xylem
movement of water + minerals from the root to leaves
Phloem
transports sugar produced during photosynthesis leaves to roots (everywhere in the plant)
