Immune System Flashcards
Pathogenic
disease causing microorganisms (Many species of bacteria are pathogenic) HARMFUL
What happens when pathogenic bacteria gain access to their host?
a wide variety of symptoms become apparent as they spread FURTHER and DEEPER into the host tissue.
Disadvantage and advantage of the toxins released by the bacteria:
cause most of the DAMAGE in infected species, but these toxins also ALERT the body to the invasion.
What are our defense mechanisms to prevent a major bacterial infection?
External, lymphatic, and antibody
External?
Includes: skin, tears, mucus, and saliva
Lymphatic System
(Mostly) Non-selective. Macrophage are specialized cells that eat/ destroy the pathogens
Anti-body formation
Selective, produced in response to the antigen
Anti-gen
a toxin or other foreign substance which induces an immune response in the body, especially the production of antibodies.
