required as a part of ISTEA, designated the Interstate Highway system and other roads important to the nation’s defense and mobility (160,955 miles); included connections to intermodal terminals (198 ports, 207 airports, 307 transit, 82 bus, 190 rail, 37 ferry, 58 pipeline and 20 multipurpose passenger)
