Transport In Plants Flashcards
What is cohesion?
Water molecules sticking together
What is Adhesion
Water molecules going up the Xylem
What is the xylem
It is a vessel which transports water and minerals by going one direction
What is the phloem vessel?
A plant vessel which goes two directions and transports water and food
Turgid meaning
Very firm. Stomata become turgid if it had a greater solute concentrate than its surroundings, resulting in water entering
Flaccid meaning
Limp. A Stoma is flaccid in surroundings where there is no tendency for water to enter
What is the effect of light on Stoma?
Light opens to Stoma because of photosynthesis which speeds up the transpiration rate.
Wind effect on plant?
Wind causes the boundary layer. This, decreasing the transpiration rate
What is the effect of heat on Stoma?
Heat will increase the relative humidity of the environment which will increase the temperature. However, the rate of transpiration will decrease because as the water transpires from the leaf, it will cool down, slightly decreasing the humidity.
Effect of wind on plant
The greater the difference between humidity in plant and the environment, the greater the rate of transpiration in the plant.
How do u measure plant transpiration?
A potometer
What is Osmosis?
The of water molecules from high area of concentration to low
How come some plants are more affected by one thing than the other?
They probably have larger leaves meaning more stomata
Of what value to s plant is the ability to lose water through transpiration?
It allows plants to pull more water through the soil. They could gather more minerals because those minerals are transported though the water.
Suppose you coated the leaves with petroleum
It would hinder the plant from transpiring
