Transport in Plants Flashcards
Give 8 features of the xylem:
-Made up of thick walled dead cells
-Which contain no cytoplasm
-Cells are hollow
-And arranged end to end
-Cell walls contain lignin - waterproof
-End walls have broken down to form a continuous transport system
-Transports water
-And mineral ions (both from roots to leaves)
Give 6 features of the phloem:
-Consists of living cells
-Tubes are formed by cells arranged end to end
-Cell walls made of cellulose
-Transports sucrose
-And amino acids (both from leaves to growing/storing points)
-Moving sucrose and amino acids around the plant requires energy, this is called translocation
What do plants take in water through?
Root hair cells
How do mineral ions move into the roots?
Through active transport.
Give 2 adaptations of root hair cells and how this helps movement:
-Thin walled (short diffusion distance)
-Hair-like extensions which increase surface area greatly
How does water move into the roots?
Through osmosis
