Asexual Reproduction in Plants Flashcards
What are 2 methods of asexual reproduction in plants?
-Natural: runners
-Artificial: cloning
What are runners?
Fast-growing stems that grow out sideways, just above the ground.
Describe how strawberry plants use runners to reproduce asexually:
1) The parent strawberry plant sends out runners
2) The runners take root at various points (a short distance away) and new plants start to grow
3) The new plants are clones of the parent strawberry plant
Is there genetic variation with asexual reproduction?
No.
How can cloning be used in asexual reproduction?
Gardeners can take cuttings from good parent plants, and then plant them to reproduce genetically identical copies of the parent plant.
Give 2 advantages of using cuttings in plant asexual reproduction:
These plants can be produced quickly and cheaply.
What 2 factors could badly affect the whole cloned population made by cuttings?
-If a disease hits
-If the environment changes
