Sexual Reproduction in Plants Flashcards
What is the male part called?
The stamen.
What is the female part called?
The carpel.
What does the male parts consist of?
The anther and filament.
What does the female parts consist of?
The stigma, style and ovary.
What is the purpose of the anther?
It contains pollen grains - these produce the male gametes (sperm).
What is the purpose of the filament?
It is the stalk that supports the anther.
What is the purpose of the stigma?
It is the end bit that that pollen grains attach to.
What is the purpose of the style?
It’s the rod-like section which supports the stigma.
What is the purpose of the ovary?
It contains the female gametes (eggs) inside ovules.
What is pollination?
The transfer of pollen from an anther to a stigma, so that the male gametes can fertilise the female gametes in sexual reproduction.
What is cross pollination?
A type of sexual reproduction where pollen is transferred from the anther of one plant to the stigma of another.
What do plants that cross-pollinate rely on?
Insects or wind.
Give 4 adaptation of plants adapted for insect pollination and their function:
-Brightly coloured petals to attract insects
-Scented flower to attract insects and nectaries (glands that secrete nectar) to attract insects
-Big, sticky pollen grains to stick to insects
-Sticky stigma so any pollen picked up by an insect will stick to stigma
Give 5 adaptation of plants adapted for wind pollination and their function:
-Small, dull petals (they don’t need to attract insects
-No nectaries or strong scents for the same reason
-A lot of pollen grains that are small and light to be carried by the wind easily
-Long filaments that hang the anthers outside the flower so a lot gets blown away by the wind
-A large feathery stigma to catch pollen as it’s carried by the wind which often hangs out of the flower too
