Transport in Plants Flashcards
What is Cellular uptake in transporting plants?
- uptake and release of water & solutes by individual cells
- absorbtion of water & minerals rom soil by root cells
- control of water & ions movement across leaf
- absortion of water & solutes
What is Tissue Transport in plant transport?
- cell to cell
- transport of water & ions across root cortex to xylem vessels
- loading of sucrose from photosynthesis cells into sieve tube cells of the phloem
What is Whole Plant Transport?
- sap within xylem & phloem
- water & ions through xylem to rest of plant
- products of photosynthesis from source to sink in phloem
What is cambium tissues?
meristem tissues in vascular bundles that contain both phloem & xylems
What’s a xylem vessel made from?
Tracheids (dead cells)
What are the adaptations of a root hair cell?
- large root numbers
- large numbers of mitochondria
- ;arge surface area
What is a Symplast pathway?
Where water moves into cytoplasm by osmosis between cells through the plasmodesmata
What is a Vascular Pathway?
Where water moves between cytoplasm, the large central vacuoles but slower
What’s the cohesion tension theory?
water molecules move out of the xylem by osmosis to cells in the mesophyll
How is water moved through the stem?
Transpiration pull = pull of water through xylem and results in negative pressure inside xylem
What is root pressure?
The guttation process creates root pressure, this is where water reaches leaf and is forced out
