Transport in Plants Flashcards
1
Q
What does the xylem do?
A
Transports water and mineral ions from roots to leaves
2
Q
What is the xylems structure?
A
- Made of thick walled dead cells that are completely hollow and arranged end to end.
- Cell wall contains lignin
3
Q
What does the phloem do?
A
Transports sucrose and amino acids from leaves to roots (translocation)
4
Q
What is the phloems structure?
A
- Living cells
- Tube are formed by cells arranged end to end but have cell walls made of cellulose
5
Q
Where do plants take in water?
A
Through their root hair cells
6
Q
What are root hair cells?
A
Thin walled (short distance) and have hair like extensions which increase the surface area.
7
Q
What/ how do the root hair cells absorb?
A
- Water and mineral ions
- Mineral ions absorbed through active transport
- Water absorbed via osmosis
