Asexual & Sexual Reproduction Flashcards
Qualities of sexual reproduction in plants?
- Produces genetically varied offspring
- Three steps needed:
1) Pollination
2) Fertilisation
3) Germination
Where are the sexual organs of a flowering plant?
In its flowers
Qualities of asexual reproduction?
- Produces genetically identical offspring
- Offspring are called clones
Advantages of asexual reproduction?
In a stable environment, it allows parents with adventurous adaptations to produce clones with same beneficial characteristics
Advantages of sexual reproduction?
In a changing environment, or where there is a threat of disease from pathogens
What are the methods of asexual reproduction in plants?
- Runner
- Tubers
- Bulbs
What is the runner method of asexual reproduction?
A new plant is produced when the runner touches the ground
What is the tubers method of asexual reproduction?
Swollen underground stems containing lots of stored food. One plant can produce many tubers which can each grow many shoots which form new plants
What is the bulbs method of asexual reproduction?
Underground buds with thick fleshy leaves containing stored food. A main shoot will grow out of the parent club and another will grow out of the side of the ‘daughter’ club , forming two plants
What is the artificial method of growing plants?
From cuttings (a piece of a plants stem with leaves attached is planted in damp compost)
