Hormonal vs Nervous Control Flashcards
What is a change in internal/ external environment called?
Stimulus
What detects stimulus?
Receptors
What responds to the stimulus?
Effectors
How do receptors and effectors communicate?
Through the nervous system, and/or the hormonal system
What does the central nervous system consist of?
Brain, and spinal chord only
What do receptors in a sense organ do when they detect a stimulus?
Send electrical impulses along sensory neurones to the CNS
Where does the CNS send electrical impulses to?
To an effector along the motor neurone
What is the job of the Central Nervous System?
To coordinate response
What does a coordinated response always need?
- Stimulus
- Receptor
- Effector
Why does the nervous system need very rapid responses?
Neurones transmit high speed electrical impulses
How is a nerve signal transferred over a synapse?
Transferred by chemicals (neurotransmitters)which diffuse across the gap
How do nerves act?
- Very fast messages
- Act for a short time
- Act on a precise area
How do hormones act?
- Slower messages
- Act for a longer time
- Act in a more general way
