Respiration Flashcards
What is the chemical equation for aerobic respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 —–> 6CO2 + 6H2O
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen —–> Carbon Dioxide + Water
What is cell respiration?
The process of breaking down food molecules to release ATP
Why does aerobic respiration release a lot of ATP?
Completely oxidises the glucose
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in plants?
Glucose —–> Ethanol + Carbon Dioxide
Why is less ATP given off in anaerobic respiration?
- Glucose is not completely broken down
- Less ATP = Less energy
What is energy used for?
- Cell division
- Transporting molecules
- Building large molecules
- Contraction of muscles cells (producing movement)
- Maintaining body temperature
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in animals?
Glucose —–> Lactic Acid
What is an oxygen debt?
The volume of oxygen needed to oxidise the lactic acid
Define aerobic respiration
Uses oxygen to break down glucose and release energy
What happens when lactic acid builds up in muscles?
- Causes cramps
- Lactic acid diffuses into the blood (high concentrations of lactic acid is toxic and is oxidised in there liver)
What experiment shows that only living things respire?
Hydrogen carbonate indicator and insects:
- Two test tubes with one insect in one and nothing in another, both with indicator
- Hydrogen carbonate indicator is yellow, but turns red when carbon dioxide concentration increases
