Transport In Flowering Plants Flashcards
Plant Biology
How are substances transported around plants
Substances are transported around plants in vascular bundles (veins)
Inside the veins are two types of special cells:
Xylem
Phloem
Describe the role of Phloem
Transports sucrose and amino acids from leaves to growing shoots and roots
Describe the role of Xylem
Transports water and mineral ions from the roots to the leaves
Understand how water is absorbed through root hair cells
Absorption of water from soil by root hair cells by osmosis
What is transpiration?
The evaporation of water from the surface of the plant
How is the rate of transpiration affected?
Changes in: Humidity Wind Speed Temperature Light intensity
How is the rate of transpiration affected by Humidity?
As humidity increases transpiration decreases
How is the rate of transpiration affected by Wind speed?
As wind speed increases transpiration increases
How is the rate of transpiration affected by Temperature?
As temperature increases transpiration increases
How is the rate of transpiration affected by Light intensity?
As light intensity increases transpiration increases
