Excretion Flashcards
What two functions do the kidneys carry out?
Osmoregulation
Excretion
order of structure of nephron
Bowmans Capsule Proximal convoluted tubule Loop of Henle Distal convoluted tubule collecting duct
Whats ultrafiltration?
Blood filtered under pressure
forced out of the blood in the glomerulus to make glomerular filtrate
Whats in glomerular filtrate?
Water Salts Urea Glucose Hormones Amino acids
Describe the reabsorption of water by the collecting duct
The permeability of collecting duct changes. Controls how much water reabsorbed from urine back into blood
Why does selective reabsorption of glucose happen at the proximal convoluted tubule
Because you need glucose for respiration, its a useful molecule
Describe the role of ADH in regulating the water content of the blood
Hormone made in pituitary gland
ADH makes the walls of the collecting ducts more permeable to water
What does urine contain?
Water
Urea
Ions
