Transport across cell membrane Flashcards
What is the cell membrane composed of?
The cell membrane is composed of lipids and protein
How do molecules move across the cell membrane?
By diffusion, osmosis and active transport
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration down a concentration gradient
Is energy need during diffusion and osmosis?
Diffusion and osmosis are passive process- no energy is needed for it to take place
Why is diffusion important to cells?
Diffusion is important to cells because it is an important strategy to move materials in and out of cells; to get raw materials in and get rid of waste materials
What substances move in the cell by diffusion?
Oxygen, amino acids and glucose
What substances move out of the cell by diffusion?
Carbon dioxide and urea
What is Osmosis?
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration through a semi-permeable membrane
What would happen to and animal cell when placed in a solution with higher water concentration than their cell contents?
It would burst ;)
What do Plant cells become if left in a solution with higher water concentration?
It becomes turgid ;D
What do Plant cells become if left in a solution with lower water concentration?
It becomes plasmolysed
What would happen to an animal cell when placed in a solution of lower concentration?
It would shrink hehe
What is turgid?
Having turgor; enlarged and swollen with water
What is plasmolysed?
Description of a plant cell in which the vacuole has shrunk and the membrane has pulled away from the wall due to water loss by osmosis
What is active transport?
Active transport is it the movement of molecules from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration against the concentration gradient
