Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
Respiration is the cellular process of releasing energy from food and storing it as ATP to be used by cells. It is a series of chemical reactions that are controlled by enzymes
What does food contain?
Food contains chemical energy
(Glucose) to help power our bodies
What is found in all cells?
Adenosine TriPhosphate is found in all cells
What does Pi stands for?
Inorganic phosphate
What does each molecule of ATP stores?
A small quantity chemical energy
What does ATP do?
ATP transfers chemical energy that all cells can use immediately
How can chemical energy be released?
Released by breaking down ATP into adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and a phosphate group
Why is energy required?
To regenerate molecules of ATP that have been broke down
How is ATP regenerated?
ATP is regenerated by joining a molecule of ADP to a phosphate group
What are the two types of respiration?
Aerobic respiration and Fermentation
When does aerobic respiration occurs?
When oxygen is present
When does fermentation occurs?
When oxygen is not present
What always happens in aerobic respiration and fermentation?
Glycolysis
If no oxygen is present what can pyruvate convert into in an animal cell?
Lactate
If no oxygen is present what can pyruvate convert into in a plant cell?
Ethanol and CO2
