Transplant Rejection Flashcards

1
Q

Rejection

A
  • Graft v. Host
  • 3 Types
    > hyperacute
    > acute
    > chronic
  • Immune system recognizes tht the transplant is not its own; begins to attack
  • Prevention = immune suppression

Q

Hyperacute Rejection

A
  • Occurs immediately
  • Antiodies react to antigens
  • Complement cascade
  • Blood clots & enzymes
  • Inflammation
  • Massive cellular destruction

Q

Acute Rejection

A
  • 1wk - 3mnths
  • 2 Mechanisms
    1. antibody mediated vasculitis leads to vessel necrosis
    2. cytotoxic & NK cells start inflammatory process & cellular lysis
  • Organ death may occur or may be medically managed

Q

Chronic Rejection

A
  • Inflammation & scarring
  • Vessel occlusion
  • Chronic ischemia bc of blood vessel injury
  • Specific to type of transplanted organ
  • Form of graft vs hosts

Q

Chronic Rejection: Nursing Implications

A
  • Be aware of rejection in conjunction w/ specific transplanted material
    > like renal failure in kidney transplant
  • Give scheduled anti-rejection medication
  • Know anti-rejection meds & side effects & therapeutic lab values
    > go read book/watch VO
