Transpiration And Translocation Flashcards

1
Q

What do phloem tubes do and what is their structure

A

Transport dissolved sugars
Made up columns of elongated living cells with small holes in the end walls to allow cell sap to flow
They transfer food substances made in the leaves to the rest of the plant

Q

What do xylem tubes do and what are they made of

A

Take water up
Made of dead cells joined end to end with no end walls between them and a hole in the middle
They carry water and mineral ions from the roots to the stems

Q

What is transpiration caused by

A

8
Q

What does evaporation create in the leaf

A

A shortage of water in the leaf, so more water is drawn up from the rest of the plant through the xylem vessels to replace it- constant transpiration

Q

What is transpiration a side effect of and why

A

Side effect of leaves adaptation for photosynthesis
They have to have stomata in them so that gases can diffuse in and out
Because there’s more water inside the plant than outside the plant, water escapes from the leaves through the stomata by diffusion
