The Heart Flashcards
what is the heart
an organ that contracts to pump blood around the body
what is the double circulatory system
two circuits joined together
what does the right ventricle do
pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs to take in oxygen
what does the left ventricle do
pumps oxygenated blood around all the other organs
what does a valve do
makes sure the blood flows in the right direction, prevent back flow
where does blood flow in through the two atria
vena cava and pulmonary vein
where does the atria contract the blood into
ventricles
where do the ventricles contract the blood into
pulmonary artery and aorta out the heart
where does the blood flow through to the organs
the arteries and returns through the veins
how is the resting heart rate controlled
by a group of cells in the right atrium wall that act as a pacemaker
what do these cells (pacemaker) produce
an electrical impulse which spreads to the surrounding muscle cells, causing them to contract
what is an artificial pacemaker
electrical devices used to correct irregularities
what is the function of the coronary artery
to supply the hearts own oxygenated blood
